Researchers analyzed the donated brains of 6 healthy elderly individuals and 7 non secondary Alzheimer's disease patients and found that patients with Alzheimer's disease carry six times more APP variant gene varieties in their neuronal cells than the general population. Therefore, researchers speculate that the ability of brain cells to modify DNA on their own may contribute to the development of Alzheimer's disease.
